  • Zachary Smith was named to the 2010 editorial advisory board of Environmental Practice.

  • Andrew Walters, Department of Psychology, was acknowledged as the 2011 Most Effective Research Mentor: Presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to student mentoring, has had a positive impact on multiple students (with an emphasis on student outcomes), has provided leadership or assistance to other research mentors and who has engaged a diverse group of students.

  • Marie Baker-Ohler, lecturer of speech communication and coordinator of NAU's 2+2 degree program at Glendale Community College, was elected president of the Arizona Communication Association and will plan the association's 2011 meeting.

    An image by Laura Camden, assistant professor of photography in the School of Communication, was selected in the ninth annual juried photography exhibit, “High and Dry: People and Places of the World’s Dry Lands.” Camden’s image, “Old Colony school playground” (Seminole, Texas), will be part of the exhibit on display at Texas Tech University’s International Cultural Center in Lubbock from Dec. 4, 2009 through Jan. 16.     • Brant Short, communication professor, was selected to receive a research grant from the Arthur W. Page Center for Integrity in Public Communication at Penn State University. Short received $3,000 for his research project, “From Greenwashing to Social Advocacy: The Ethical Imperative in Green Branding.” The funds will go toward travel for public lectures on the topic. A book about ethics in environmental communication is the planned outcome for most of the $48,800 in research grants awarded to the 14 scholars selected.

    • Peter Friederici, assistant professor in the School of Communication, is the 2009 recipient of the Copper Quill Award, given by the Friends of the Flagstaff Public Library. Given annually since 1995,  the award honors a local author for a body of work.
    • Patricia Murphey, assistant professor of visual communication, was awarded third place in the logo design category for the "American Design Awards—Semi Annual Design Contest." This is a peer-reviewed competition with 1,313 entries and 52 winners. Murphey's design was for the charter school Pine Forest, a Waldorf school in Flagstaff.photo by Sam Minkler

    • Sam Minkler, associate professor of photography, had a photo featured at the photography conference, “Visual Sovereignty,” at the University of California, Davis on April 4 and 5. The conference featured more than 30 of the world’s foremost American Indian, Australian Aborigine and New Zealand Maori photographers. Minkler’s photo is featured on the conference’s web site and will be published in a book of images.


    • Lea Parker, a professor in the School of Communication, published a photograph and essay in "Thoreau's Legacy," a book by The Union of Concerned Scientists. The book will be published by Penguin Classics.

    • The fine art photography of Sam Minkler, associate professor in the School of Communication, was featured during an art market at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York City.
